Tell us the story of your brand – how and why did it start?

2DiE4 started with a deep love for real food. The name comes from Australia, where our friend Clive Lawler began fermenting nuts back in 2002. He discovered an ancient method used by indigenous cultures: soaking nuts in the sea and drying them on the beach.

He experimented with walnuts first and coined the name ‘Activation’ for this process. When friends tasted the result, they said, “these nuts are to die for!” That’s how the brand was born.

Agni Thalgott, my business partner has always had a passion for fermented foods, and she brought Clive’s recipes in 2012 to Europe. She had already refined the recipes, added her own ideas, and started to sell activated nuts, when I joined her a few years later.

Together we founded 2DiE4 Live Foods in the Bavarian Alps.

What’s something we might not know about specific nuts?

Take the humble walnut—rich in omega-3s, but also high in tannins. Those tannins give it a bitter taste and can irritate your stomach. Our activation process removes the bitterness, making the flavor round and smooth, and the nutrients easier to absorb.

Another example: our wild-harvested Brazil nuts from Bolivia are naturally selenium-rich. Just one a day meets your daily need—but only if your body can absorb it. That’s why activation makes a difference.

Your products seem to reflect a lot of what people care about in food today. Is that intentional—or just how you work?

We don’t follow trends—but we do care deeply about food, health, and the way things are made. So yes, what we do aligns with what more and more people are looking for.

Describe your products Filip and how they are made.

We are very focussed and produce activated nuts only. They are organic, raw before activation, and processed in small batches at our production site in Gut Mooseurach, Germany.

The process starts with wässern—soaking the nuts in pure spring water and hand-harvested sea salt from Croatia or Brittany. This triggers fermentation and breaks down anti-nutrients.

Then we dry them slowly at low temperatures—never roasted, never rushed. The result is a

crunchy, umami-rich nut that your body can actually use.

What exactly is activation and why should we care?

Activation is a two-step fermentation process. It transforms the nut. You soak it to start the sprouting phase, then dry it gently to preserve nutrients. This removes phytic acid and lectins—compounds that block mineral absorption and irritate the gut.

So what you get is a nut with:

  • More available nutrients like zinc, magnesium, and calcium

  • Fewer allergens

  • Longer shelf life

Are there specific benefits for people with gut issues?
